The Lavagem da 46 Rua or Cleansing of 46th street in 2010, much bigger and highly acclaimed, will feature its Grand Marshal and new popular folkloric festivities from various parts of Brazil. Activities pertaining to the State of Bahia will take center stage and blend with rhythms and cultural manifestations of several other states of the Federation portraying rhythms of Maracatu, Samba and Frevo.

The traditional “baianas” will be the main attraction of the Lavagem. They will be dressed in white colors, adorned with beads and carrying rosaries and flowers. They will also carry white jars and vases filled with perfumed water, energizing the various groups in the parade throughout Little Brazil (46th Street).

This opening event of the Brazilian Day will bring several attractions to the stage to be located on 46th Street between Madison and 5th Avenue. The audience will be introduced to dignitaries, sponsors and representatives who made the event possible. Then the stage will be opened to Brazilian bands, featuring world renowned artists and local artists, samba dancers, games involving crowd participation and the exciting 3rd annual pageant “Musa do Brazilian Day,” in which the audience will be the judges.

‘Bembé do Mercado’ Exposition

The traditional party ‘Bembé do Mercado’, which celebrates slavery abolishment and takes place annually in Santo Amaro, BA (Brazil), will be Edgar de Souza’s Photo Exhibition Theme at Chashama Gallery in New York. It starts on August 30 through September 9, 2010, and the Gallery is located at 112W, 44th Street, between 6th Ave and Broadway.

This is a traditional ‘candomblé’* celebration that arose back in 1889. According to Souza, his images aim to show Brazil folks integration, mainly in the region of Bahia. He adds: “The African and Portuguese cultural diversity is more evident in this part of the Country”.

The exhibition is produced by Silvana Magda and is sponsored by The Brazilians Newspaper, The Palmares Foundation and Chashama Gallery.

In 2009, ‘Bembé do Mercado’ celebrated 121 years of slavery abolishment in Brazil. This event often happens among other cultural activities, mainly religious rites such as ‘candomblé’, and music presentations. This exhibition has also been in Paris and Angola.

History and Tradition:

May 13 1889, a year later from the act that gave freedom to slaves, the newly common citizens from Santo Amaro da Purificação wanted to celebrate the anniversary of this great milestone. Defying countless speeches and any sort of human expression restrictions imposed to former slaves and their descendants, the black community decided to call upon the `Candomblés` and ‘play the drums’ for three days in a row to invoke the spirit of the ‘Orixás’**.

The ‘Bembé’ is not only a celebration for captivity’s freedom, but also a party that entails historical characteristics in many aspects, such as political, social, religious and other signs and symbols of interpretation that are everywhere in these types of manifestations.

Bahia Week in New York was created by Silvana Magda to show and promote the rich culture of the state of Bahia, in northeast Brazil. The week consisted of presentations of live performances, exhibitions, seminars, all focusing on Bahia and its unique culture.

From September 1 – 6, Bahia Week in New York presented various cultural activities, from music shows to art, workshops, and speeches pertaining to Bahia, considered to be one of the most exotic and beautiful touristic destination.

Paintings were showcased from Galina, "Galina’s Aquarelas", a Brazilian artist who works with water colors and oils.

Jewlery was showcased by Fernando DaSilva. Fernando DaSilva is part of the Beadalon“ Design Team and after almost 9 years, his jewelry design work remains loyal to three basic elements: style, texture and color.

On August 25th 2009,

Silvana Magda decided to open the Chashama gallery doors on 44th street to showcase the brillant work of artists ; Ricardo Pimentel, Chester Higgens, Luiz Ribeiro. All of which are photographers who photographed the Lavagem da Rua 46/ Cleansing of 46th street in its first year in 2008. This opening cocktail was to showcase their work and create buzz for the Lavagem 2009.

What is the Lavagem da Rua 46 ?

Lavagem da Rua 46, means "The Cleansing of 46^thStreet" in English, is an event produced by Silvana Magda’s Viva Brazil Dance Company, Inc., a Not- for- Profit, tax exempt, 501C3 organization that works in conjunction with the Brazilian Day in New York. The mission behind the Lavagem is to create a unique cultural celebration experience in the Big Apple.

“The Cleansing of the 46^th Street embraces the responsibility to help expand the Brazilian culture in the world’s capital” says the event producer and general coordinator Silvana Magda. “We are fully involved in this project to maintain our traditions and promote our artists who of course, also have the particular responsibility of strengthening the positive image of Brazil abroad.”

A mystic tradition that started in the 18^thcentury in Bahia, when an image of Christ was brought from Portugal and arrive in Brazil 1745. The attribution of miraculous powers made Our Lord of Bonfim an object of popular devotion.

It is believed that the Cleansing of Bonfim was originated in the times when the slaves were forced to wash the stairway of the Church for the Patron Saint’s party.

Currently this traditional celebration consists of an enormous procession that leaves the Church of Conceição da Praia towards the Church of Bonfim, a distance of 8 Km. Hundreds of baianas open the procession and take, both in their hands and on their heads, vases with flowers and perfumed water in order to wash the stairway and cleanse the devotees.

The procession also embraces all religions and creeds since Our Lord of Bonfim, according to the religious syncretism in Bahia, corresponds to Oxalá.

The Lavagem/Cleasing was brought abroad and reformulated for the United States by Silvana Magda, with the support of the Brazilian entrepreneur João de Matos.

This year, the Lavagem/Cleansing unites diverse voices and rhythms to genuinely represent the enchantment, the tradition of not only Bahia but all the people. This glorious event will celebrate the purification, the energy, the nature, the unification of the people and the perpetuation of peace.
